Three common dental problems

Most common problems that arise when you go to the dentist and can be easily dealt with if you are preemptive about the problem. Here are the common problems and some steps to help:

The plaque will build up on the surface of your teeth and eat away the enamel and in extreme cases can form a hole in the tooth. Plaque is a sticky substance that feeds on sugar from the foods we put in our mouth. Plaque produces acids that break down enamel creating a cavity. One a cavity forms, your dentist will have to put a filling into it.

The best way to combat cavities is to brush twice a day, floss at least once a day, and visit your dentist once a year for a cleaning and exam.

Gum disease

Gum disease is also referred to as periodontal disease and is caused when plaque attacks the gums. Early stages of gum disease are known as gingivitis, and advanced stages are periodontitis. Gingivitis symptoms can include red and swollen gums and gums that bleed easily. In advanced stages, the gums will pull away from the teeth and form spaces that can become infected. Smoking, diabetes and hormonal changes can increase your chances of developing gum disease.

The good news is gingivitis can be reversed with regular flossing and brushing.

Enamel erosion

Enamel on your is worn down every day by acids in the drinks and foods we eat. Signs of erosions can include tooth sensitivity, cracks and chips, and discoloration. When enamel erodes, your teeth are more susceptible to cavities.

The best way to prevent enamel loss is to eat less acidic food and drink and brush with fluoride toothpaste, and drink water throughout the day.

The best way to prevent enamel loss is to cut out highly acidic food and drinks, brush with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush, and drink water throughout the day.
