Preventative Dental Care for Children

The baby teeth of children, even though they eventually lose them, are just as important as the permanent teeth that will eventually come in. Children may not keep their baby teeth forever, but they require as much care care as their future permanent teeth. Helping your child develop good oral hygiene habits while they are young will provide health benefits that last well into adulthood. Preventative dental care for children will also put them on the right track of maintaining a healthy smile, teeth, and gums.

Preventive Dental Care for Children

Early childhood caries, also known as dental cavities, tops the list of chronic diseases that affect young children. You may or may not be surprised to learn that one quarter of all children in the United States between ages 3 and 18 do not visit the dentist regularly or even at all. Common dental diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease are very preventable, especially when preventative dental care for children is taught and maintained during early childhood.

Start Preventative Dental Care for Children Regimens Early

Even before a child’s teeth have broken through the gums, a baby’s gums should be wiped down with gauze or a wet cloth after eating. This helps to protect them and developing teeth from bacteria. The American Dental Association recommends that children schedule an appointment and visit a dentist by their first birthday. At this initial visit, your child’s dentist will teach you more about proper pediatric oral hygiene and preventative dental care for children. Your child’s dentist will also check for cavities. On your child’s second birthday, establish and begin a daily brushing routine.

As your child ages, there are two particular treatments we recommend to help prevent tooth decay. These recommended treatments are:

Topical Fluoride –Your child’s teeth will be more resistant to decay and will be better protected if you apply fluoride directly to their teeth in higher concentrations than is found in toothpaste or tap water.

Dental Sealants – Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings which are painted directly onto the chewing surfaces of children’s teeth and help to prevent tooth decay. Brushing and flossing cannot get into all of the grooves and depressions of a child’s molars. Dental sealants work by forming a protective coating over these vulnerable areas of the teeth and help keep out food and plaque. It is recommended that most children have sealants applied on their permanent molars and premolars just as soon as they come in.
