Tools of the Trade: Dental Tips for Equipment Care

When it comes to proper dental hygiene, the tools you use are just as important as the habits you keep. Proper and regular brushing technique lose their effectiveness if your toothbrush is compromised. Likewise with flossing and mouthwash use. Take care of your toiletries, and they will take care of you. Consider these dental tips for proper equipment care:

Most people tend to keep their toothbrushes in cups on the bathroom counter. After all, it makes sense to keep them within easy reach of the sink. However, leaving toothbrushes in the bathroom exposes them to germs, particularly from toilet flushing. Consider leaving your toothbrush in a disinfecting solution between uses, or storing it in a cool and dry place. Also, be sure to replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or whenever the bristles show significant signs of wear and tear.

Much like toothbrushes, dental floss should be discarded if it is discovered to be frayed. Until its use, it should be kept sealed in its container, and after use, it should immediately be discarded do not attempt to reuse a length of floss. If you prefer to use a flossing wand, it is beneficial to take the same precautions as you would with a toothbrush.

*Keep in mind that it is not recommended under any circumstances to share toothbrushes or other dental supplies.*
